His book on Paris was described by Peter Ackroyd as 'masterly' and as 'a magnificent achievement' by the New York Times. In France, this book was shortlisted for the Prix Grandgousier and has been praised in the pages of Le Monde des Livres, Le Nouvel Observateur and L'Humanité as well as being chosen as a book of the week by Jacques Munier on France-Culture.

Professor Hussey is currently working on two books: a book called The Dark Orgy, which is a study of the English in Paris during the French Revolution, and a book called The Longest War, which is a cultural history of France and the Islamic World. Professor Hussey's scholarly work on the French-speaking world touches on many contemporary issues and for this reason he writes regularly for the Observer and Guardian newspapers and contributes a monthly column on European Literature for the New Statesman.
